The "Select" part is the brew-volume switch, and it is more than a marketing line. Choosing half a carafe changes the brewing speed and the hotplate temperature together, so a five-cup pot is brewed to the Golden Cup standard rather than simply being a short version of the ten-cup program. The brew basket also stops the flow automatically when you lift the carafe out, and the machine shuts itself off after 100 minutes.

What justifies the price over time is the repairability. The internals are simple, Technivorm sells parts directly, and the 5-year warranty is unusually long for a countertop appliance. One note on the glass-carafe version: it keeps coffee warm on a heated base, which is convenient but is not the same as a thermal carafe — after an hour, a hotplate is a hotplate.

This machine is not SCA certified and will not win a side-by-side taste test against the other machines on this list. It is on this list because it does the one job reliably at a tenth of the price, and roughly fifty thousand ratings averaging 4.4 stars is a stronger reliability signal than most premium brewers can produce.

The useful features are the ordinary ones. The 24-hour programmable timer means coffee is ready before you are. "Sneak-A-Cup" pauses the flow so you can pull a cup mid-brew without a mess, the front water window shows exactly how much you are about to brew, and it shuts off after two hours on its own. The carafe is 12 five-ounce cups — about 60 ounces, not 12 mugs — and the brew basket takes standard paper filters and washes out.

For a first apartment, an office, a guest house, or a second pot in the basement, this is a sensible low-risk buy rather than a compromise you will resent.

This is the machine to buy if you want certified brewing without the Moccamaster's price or its footprint. OXO's BetterBrew system holds the water at 194–205°F, and a "rainmaker" showerhead spreads it across the grounds rather than dropping it in one spot — the two things that actually determine whether a drip machine tastes like anything.

The double-wall vacuum carafe is the practical advantage here over the Moccamaster's glass-and-hotplate setup: the last cup at 9am tastes like the first one at 7am, because nothing has been sitting on a warming plate. Go into the custom profile and you can set bloom volume, bloom time, brew temperature and flow rate independently, then have the machine remember that profile — which is the closest a drip machine gets to reproducing a pour-over recipe without you standing over a kettle.

It ships with both a cone and a flat-bottom filter basket, on the reasoning (backed by SCA and Coffee Science Foundation work) that basket geometry changes the cup: cone baskets tend to push fruit-forward notes, flat-bottom ones a rounder, more even extraction. There is also a cold brew preset that produces a concentrate in about 30 minutes rather than overnight.

The rest is conveniences done properly: a 60-ounce removable tank with a built-in water filter, a 24-hour delay start, and a dual-wall thermal carafe Breville rates to hold coffee above 150°F for four hours. Buy it if you enjoy adjusting things. If you know you never will, the Moccamaster is the better $350.

Most certified brewers are built around an 8-to-12-cup pot, and brewing two cups in a machine designed for ten rarely goes well.
